The government of Armenia is inaugurating a new president on Wednesday, April 9, at 2 in the afternoon. Large crowds are expected in the downtown area in connection with the official events, which will include a military procession through Freedom Square and evening festivities at Republic Square.

Demonstration in Yerevan 03/21/2008

The state of emergency imposed by the Government of Armenia is scheduled to expire at midnight, March 20, 2008. There is a continuing possibility that political demonstrations will occur again in Yerevan, starting as early as March 21, 2008.

The Co-Chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group (Ambassadors Yuri Merzlyakov for Russia, and Bernard Fassier for France, as well as Mike Carpenter, Advisor to U.S. Co-Chair Matt Bryza) met with the Armenian Minister of Foreign Affairs Vardan Oskanian in Vienna on the 14th of March and with the Azerbaijani Minister of Foreign Affairs Elmar Mammadyarov in Paris on the 15th of March.

Warden Message in effect until further notice

State of Emergency for Yerevan

The Government of Armenia has declared a State of Emergency in the city of Yerevan for 20 days, following yesterday's significant unrest, which resulted in serious casualties. The U.S. Embassy again recommends that all American Citizens avoid key downtown areas where protesters have been known to gather and where the police and military presence is high. If you live in the downtown area, exercise caution, avoid any large groups, and minimize unnecessary movements outside.

Early this morning, Saturday, March 1, authorities rounded up demonstrators at Opera Square. At midday a riot was reported near the French Embassy – which currently remains in a standoff between protesters and police.
